Editorial standards.

These standards describe the practices supported by the current publishing workflow.

Accuracy and verification

We check material facts against trustworthy sources, distinguish confirmed information from allegations and update developing stories when reliable information changes.

Attribution and transparency

Stories identify source attribution where available. We do not present another organization’s reporting, a rumor or an automated output as independently witnessed fact.

News, analysis and sponsored material

News reporting is presented separately from opinion or analysis. Advertising, sponsorships and sponsored content must be clearly labeled and must not be represented as independent news.

Automation, privacy and fairness

Technology may assist with organization and publishing, but story-specific facts still require verification and attribution. We avoid unnecessary personal information, respect privacy, write responsible headlines and give relevant people a fair opportunity to be represented when practical.

Corrections

When a factual error is found, we correct the published record and identify material corrections when appropriate. See the corrections policy.
